The Death of the Grown-up

Diana West has written a book called The Death of the Grown-up, which is reviewed in the American Spectator by Christopher Orlet. The thesis - that superannuated teenagers are brining down western civilisation - is more than a little attractive. The lack of grown-ups and the glorification of youth (Cf World Youth Day) is a definite problem both theoretical and practical.
The problem I have with the thesis as it stands is that while the vile excesses of PC multiculturalism are evident, there is a point to the liberal worldview. Human rights legislation is needed. The weak must be protected. Minorities must not be oppressed. Workers' rights must be defended. While it's easy to poke fun at Harley driving grandpas with ponytails a little more intellectual engagement is necessary before you can prove this thesis historically.
