The opinion page of The Australian on Wednesday was quite a study. Tom Switzer showed his predilection for a little bit of everything - everything well-reasoned that is. Christopher's article promoting Tony Abbott's leadership aspirations told us not much new, although, it has to be said, very elegantly. He likes Tony and hates Malcolm. Ca va sans dire. I understand where he's coming from. My sentiments are similar. His last paragraph on the Republic reminded me of several fine, conspiratorial lunches - at least one of which I cooked and served under a spreading olive tree. It was a good bouillebaise if my memory is not entirely swallowed up by booze and the effluxion of time.
Paul Kelly's column brought back no such fond memories. Kelly is propagating the idea of a sort of Cultural Revolution in the Liberal Party, presided over by Chairman Malcolm. "...many Liberals cannot grasp that the old ideas and structures must be slain." "At the organasiational level the Liberal Party needs to show steel...ratbags should be expelled from the party." You can almost hear the click of the knitting needles.
Alan Wood was playing with doom and gloom economically, summoning the shade of Gough Whitlam. It's a nice trick to quote a pessimistic senior American economist at great length and then to say in passing that you don't believe a bit of it. Noel Coward sang it best, "There are bad times just around the corner." The Chinese investment in the Greenback, it seems, could lead to an economic downturn in the new powerhouse of Asia. That's not even taking into account the scarcity of oil. I was frightened. I'll be saving the prawn heads from now on.
And Janet Albrechtsen....
