The Peel Hotel
May 28th 2007 03:58
The Peel Hotel in Melbourne won an action in the ADT in Victoria for a dispensation from the Equal Opportunity Act so that the hotel could exclude people who were not gay. Headlines screamed, of course, "Hetrosexuals banned from Gay Pub". It is an interesting case. Their argument was that there had been incidents were patrons had been subjected to sexually based insults and threats of violence by groups of allegedly straight boys and girls.
You can imagine the scenario: homophobic ring ins from the suburbs slumming it in a gay bar in order to prove their masculinity and be titillated at the same time or hen's parties of pissed twenty-somethings out to convert the usual patrons.
I'm not sure that many heterosexuals would like to be associated with that sort of louche and borish behaviour. You wonder why a court case was necessary though. And how do they tell anyway? Maybe those Lesbian bouncers could get a job in the Vatican in the Congregation that deals with Seminaries.
