The Galaxy Poll
June 4th 2007 02:27
The Prime minister is clawing his way back into contention. While the Opposition still has a commanding lead, even if an election were held today it wouldn't be a wipe-out. The broader question is the volatility of the electorate - not good for either side. Good God, we might even have a hung parliament!
Paul Kelly must be feeling a little goose-like this morning himself. The thought that opinions polls are an inevitable and infallible predictor of elections in the medium and long term, like the entrails of birds, has a corrupting effect on political discourse. Journalists are busy positioning themselves for influence with the next government rather than offering accurate reporting or thoughtful opinion.
Opinion polls are a bit like the betting ring at a country race meeting. It is a guide, but we all know how unreliable. Even the odds-on favourite can lose on a heavy track.
I draw your attention to Launceston Race 2 yesterday where a horse called "Chifley" came in last, beaten to the post by one called "Governor-General". There is no God.
