Election Called
October 14th 2007 02:52
I have just seen on the TV the Prime Minister announce a Federal election for the 24th November. His address was predictable, but predictably excellent. He was very much in control of the press conference - unwary journalists were given an effortless, though elegant, bitch slapping. He is a star performer. He twisted the knife on industrial relations, on the prospect of union bosses making our laws and on having ALP control of every legislature in the country. He is so good with the fear factor. I'm sure he could without raising a sweat terrify Grant Denya . (The poor boy has a segment on Sunrise called Dare Denya were malicious viewers write in daring him to do unspeakably scary things for the camera. I was going to invite him to have dinner with my family. Very frightening indeed.)
The big question is that of the opinion polls. Have the voters already made up their minds and locked in their votes? Or can the Coalition stave off Labor inroads into key marginals to such an extent that Labor piles up votes uselessly in safe seats without winning sufficient seats to form Government. I suspect he will be burning a brace of candles before the altar of St Paul Keating in memory of the 1993 election.
One thing in the PM's favour is that the Cardinal seems to be supporting Kevin. His track record on cheapening the moral authority of the Church by useless PR driven interventions is manifest. And it has been uniformly counterproductive - think of his brief republicanism before he was made a Prince of the Church. That really swayed the electorate! Maybe he really is a Howard supporter and is trying to cruel Rudd's pitch by offering his shop soiled political support!
